Albany Leon " Barney " Bigard [1] (March 3, 1906 – June 27, 1980) [2] was an American jazz clarinetist known for his 15-year tenure with Duke Ellington. He also played tenor saxophone. Biography. Bigard was born in New Orleans to Creole parents, Alexander and Emanuella Bigard. He had two brothers, Alexander Jr. and Sidney. [3] .

As a child Barney Bigard had at first resisted his family’s attempts to point him to a career in music, choosing on his own to become an engraver. But he capitulated to take clarinet lessons from Lorenzo Tio Jr., one of the classic teachers and exponents of the instrument.
