George Porter was an English chemist who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1967 for his work on flash photolysis. He was also a Director of the Royal Institution, a President of the Royal Society, and a Chancellor of the University of Leicester.
Biographical. George Porter was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire on the 6th December 1920. He married Stella Jean Brooke on the 25th August 1949 and they have two sons, John and Andrew. His first education was at local primary and grammar schools and in 1938 he went, as Ackroyd Scholar, to Leeds University.

George Porter Jr. is an American musician, best known as the bassist and singer of the Meters. Along with Art Neville, Porter formed the group in the mid 1960s and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989.
