Beniamino Gigli (born March 20, 1890, Recanati, near Ancona, Italy—died Nov. 30, 1957, Rome) was one of the greatest Italian operatic tenors of the first quarter of the 20th century. Gigli studied in Rome, and, after winning a competition at Parma in 1914, he made his debut at Rovigo, Italy, as Enzo in Amilcare Ponchielli’s La gioconda.
