Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi wurde am 2. Oktober 1869 in Porbandar als Sohn des dortigen Chefministers geboren. Er entstammte der Hindukaste der "Vaishyas", d.h. der Kaufleute. Die Gandhis waren damit der dritten Kaste, welche die gesellschaftliche und politische Oberschicht bildet, angehörig.
