Der Titel wurde erstmals im Jahre 1691 von König Jakob II., der allerdings seit der Glorious Revolution 1688 entthront war, an Patrick Sarsfield verliehen, einen irischen General im jakobitischen Heer. Er erlosch 1718, als dessen Sohn im Exil ohne Titelerben starb.
Sarsfield, Patrick (d. 1693), soldier, lst earl of Lucan , was the second son, and youngest of five children, of Patrick Sarsfield and his wife Anne, daughter of Rory O'More (qv), a leader of the 1641 rebellion. The Sarsfields were an Old English family who had estates at Lucan, Co. Dublin, and Tully, Co. Kildare.
