Her Excellency Froyla Tzalam Mendez was sworn in as Belize’s third Governor General on 27 May 2021, taking over from former Governor General Sir Colville Young. The ceremony took place at the Government House Belize House of Culture in Belize City.
Since 27 May 2021, the governor-general has been Dame Froyla Tzalam. The office of the governor-general was created on 21 September 1981, when Belize gained independence from the United Kingdom as a sovereign state and an independent constitutional monarchy.
27. Mai 2021 · Thursday, May 27 th, will go into the history books as the day that Belize installed its third and first Indigenous American Governor General in the Commonwealth, Froyla Tzalam. The historic moment took place at the House of Culture, where Tzalam was sworn in as the new representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II -Belize’s Head of State.
Froyla Tzalam is the third Governor-General of Belize and the second woman to hold the title. Tzalam is a Mopan Maya from San Antonio, Toledo, and as a result, she is proud and influential in both the Mayan and Western worlds.
