Ostilio Ricci (* 1540 in Fermo; † 1603 in Firenze) war ein italienischer Mathematiker der Frühen Neuzeit. Er war ein Lehrer von Galileo Galilei und Hof-Mathematiker von Francesco I. de’ Medici .
Ostilio Ricci da Fermo (1540–1603) was an Italian mathematician . Biography. He was a university professor in Florence at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, founded in 1560 by Giorgio Vasari. Ricci is also known for being Galileo Galilei 's teacher.
Ricci began to teach military engineering to the pages of the Grand Duke Francesco in 1580. By 1586 he was mathematician to the Grand Duke. In 1583 he also gave instruction in Euclid and Archimedes to Galileo. Ostilio Ricci, a professor at the Drawing Academy in Florence and a personal friend of Vincenzo Galilei's (c.1520-1591), helped Galileo in his study of Euclid (4th century B.C.) and Archimedes (287-212 B.C.), thus contributing to his decision to abandon the study of medicine for that of mathematics.
