Other titles: Earl of Montagu (1689) and Baron Montagu of Boughton (1621) Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu (1638–c. 1709) was a courtier and diplomat. John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu (1690–1749), only son of the 1st Duke, died without male issue.
In erster Verleihung wurde der Titel am 14. April 1705 für Ralph Montagu, 1. Earl of Montagu geschaffen. Zusammen mit dem Dukedom wurde ihm der nachgeordnete Titel Marquess of Monthermer verliehen. Under Queen Anne, he secured promotion to the highest rank in the peerage by a family alliance with the Duke of Marlborough ( John Churchill II ). He died of pleurisy on 9 Mar. 1709, and was buried at Warkton.
