Aelia Eudocia Augusta ( / ˈiːliə juːˈdoʊʃə ɔːˈɡʌstə /; Greek: Αιλία Ευδοκία Αυγούστα; c. 401 – 460 AD), also called Saint Eudocia, was an Eastern Roman empress by marriage to Emperor Theodosius II ( r. 408–450 ), and a prominent Greek historical figure in understanding the rise of Christianity during the beginning of the Byzantine Empire.

In Her Own Words: The Life and Poetry of Aelia Eudocia. In Her Own Words: The Life and Poetry of Aelia Eudocia is the first full-length study to examine Eudocia’s writings as a unified whole and to situate them within their wider fifth-century literary, social, and religious contexts.
By structuring Eudocia’s travels around specific moments when her own words survive, this chapter advances a more nuanced model of her euergetistic and alimentary programs and complicates how Eudocia expressed her religious identity to diverse, non-Christian/Orthodox audiences.
Eudocia is better known for her Homeric cento than for her Antiochene euergetism or her ekphrastic poem from Hammat Gader. This chapter examines Eudocia’s Homeric cento alongside her prefatory poem that explains how and why she paraphrased the Bible with lines from the Iliad and Odyssey .
