Shuji Nakamura (中村 修二, Nakamura Shūji, born May 22, 1954) is a Japanese-American electronic engineer and inventor of the blue LED, a major breakthrough in lighting technology.
Widely recognized as pioneer in light emitters based on wide-bandgap semiconductors, Nakamura continues to focus on development of GaN thin film technology for the developments of high efficient Nitride-based LEDs and laser diodes.
Shuji Nakamura is a Japanese inventor of efficient blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that enable bright and energy-saving white light sources. He worked at Nichia and the University of California, Santa Barbara, and shared the Nobel Prize with Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano.
Biographical. Shuji Nakamura was born on May 22, 1954 in Oku, a tiny fishing village on the Pacific coast of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands. Farming is the principle occupation in Oku. Local farmers grow yams on steps cut into steep hillsides.
