Michael I. Posner (/ ˈ p oʊ z n ər /; born September 12, 1936) is an American psychologist who is a researcher in the field of attention, and the editor of numerous cognitive and neuroscience compilations.
In this chapter, we consider three major functions that have been prominent in cognitive accounts of attention (Kahneman 1973, Posner & Boies 1971): (a) orienting to sensory events; (b) detecting signals for focal (conscious) processing, and (c) maintaining a vigilant or alert state.
