Terayama Shuji was born the only son of Terayama Hachiro and Terayama Hatsu in Hirosaki City, Aomori on December 10th, 1935; but his birth and name were officially registered on January 10th, 1936. His father, an officer in the "thought police", leaves for the Pacific War in early 1941.

In honour of the first anniversary of Ren Hang’s death, we examine the life and work of the experimental Japanese filmmaker Shuji Terayama, whose work inspired the late photographer above anyone else.
29. Feb. 2012 · Shuji Terayama was a Japanese avant-garde artist, poet, and filmmaker who explored the boundaries of language, media, and performance. He created Shuntaro Tanikawa Video Letter, a collaborative project with poet Shuntaro Tanikawa, which is part of MoMA's collection.
By refuting established common knowledge and values and capturing the world from different angles, Terayama keenly portrayed conditions such as social constraints and restrictions in a quest to free the human spirit from all restraints.
