Alberto Burri (1915-1995) war ein Arzt, der zum Maler wurde und Materialbilder aus Stoff, Holz, Nägeln und Kunststoff schuf. Er zeigte seine Werke in der Biennale von Venedig, der documenta in Kassel und anderen internationalen Ausstellungen.
Die Retrospektive „Alberto Burri. Das Trauma der Malerei“ entstand in Kooperation mit der Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York anlässlich des 100. Geburtstags des Künstlers. 1966 erwarb die Kunstsammlung Nordrhein- Westfalen bereits ein Sacco von Burri.
