Sonia Sanchez (born Wilsonia Benita Driver; September 9, 1934) is an American poet, writer, and professor. She was a leading figure in the Black Arts Movement and has written over a dozen books of poetry, as well as short stories, critical essays, plays, and children's books.

A recipient of many honors and awards, including a 2022 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the 2001 Robert Frost Medal, the 2016 Shelley Memorial Award, the 2018 Wallace Stevens Award, and the Jackson Poetry Prize, Sanchez was selected as Philadelphia’s first poet laureate in 2011.
Sonia Sanchez—poet, activist, scholar—was the Laura Carnell Professor of English and Women's Studies at Temple University. She is the recipient of both the Robert Frost Medal for distinguished lifetime service to American poetry and the Langston Hughes Poetry Award.

Sanchez's mother died a year later, leaving the young girl to be raised by her paternal grandmother, who unlocked her gift for poetry. At age four, Sanchez learned to read, and by the age of six, she began to write.
