Pauline Kael (born June 19, 1919, Petaluma, California, U.S.—died September 3, 2001, Great Barrington, Massachusetts) was a prominent American film critic of the second half of the 20th century. Kael graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1940. For a number of years she made a precarious living with various minor jobs.
