Jerome Robbins stammte aus einem jüdischen New Yorker Elternhaus. Nach seiner Schulausbildung begann er ein Studium an der New York University , unterbrach es aber bereits nach einem Jahr. Dann studierte er Ballett bei Ella Daganova (1897 – 1988), Eugene Loring (1911 – 1982) und dem englischen Tanzpädagogen Antony Tudor (1908 – 1987) und ließ sich zum Modern Dance-Tänzer ausbilden.
In all, he was awarded with five Tony Awards, two Academy Awards (including the special Academy Honorary Award), the Kennedy Center Honors (1981), the National Medal of Arts (1988), the French Legion of Honor, and an Honorary Membership in the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
