In earlier times, the area occupied by the harbour was considerably larger than it is today, up to ten miles (16 km) wide at its widest point, with large mud flats on both sides. These were known as the North Slob and the South Slob from the Irish word slab, meaning mud. [1]
The North Slob (from the Irish slab, meaning 'mud' or 'mire') is a large area of reclaimed land to the north of Wexford harbour, drained by ditches and protected by Dutch-style dykes. It's prime birdwatching territory – home to 35% of the world's population of Greenland white-fronted geese each winter, some 10,000 in total.
The North Slob in Wexford was created in the middle of the 1800s by the building of a sea wall on the northern side of Wexford Harbour. Roughly 1,000 hectares of mudflats were reclaimed and this area was then turned into agricultural land similar to the Dutch polders. However, it is the remaining 200 hectares of the North Slob that interest us.
Nördlich des Hafens von Wexford befindet sich das Gebiet North Slob, das in jedem Winter die Heimat von ca. 10.000 Blässgänsen darstellt (knapp ein Drittel der Welt-Population).
