Big Mama Thornton. Thornton was the first artist to record "Hound Dog" (Peacock 1612), with which she had a Number 1 hit in the Billboard R&B chart in 1953 selling two million copies,. Later the same year she released "They Call Me Big Mama" (Peacock 1621).
Zwischen 1951 - 1954 nahm Big Mama einige Titel für das Label "Peacock" zusammen mit der Johnny Otis Band auf. Ab 1957 machte sie eine schwere Zeit ohne feste Band und Engagements durch und tingelte nur noch durch kleine Clubs. Mit dem Blues Revival der 60er Jahre änderte sich ihre Lage.
