Shairport Sync can be built as an AirPlay 2 player (with some limitations) or as "classic" Shairport Sync – a player for the older, but still supported, AirPlay (aka "AirPlay 1") protocol. Metadata such as artist information and cover art can be requested and provided to other applications.

AirPlay 2 operation requires a companion program called NQPTP and requires a somewhat more powerful system. Please see AIRPLAY2.md for more. Note that you can still build Shairport Sync to support "classic" AirPlay (aka "AirPlay 1") as before. Shairport Sync is an AirPlay audio player — it plays audio streamed from iTunes, iOS devices and third-party AirPlay sources such as ForkedDaapd and others. Audio played by a Shairport Sync-powered device stays synchronised with the source and hence with similar devices playing the same source.
Shairport Sync plays AirPlay audio. It can be built to stream either from "classic" AirPlay (aka "AirPlay 1") or from AirPlay 2 devices. AirPlay 2 support is limited, and AirPlay 2 from iTunes for Windows is not supported. For AirPlay 2 operation, a companion program called nqptp must be installed.
