Awami League, known as Awami Muslim League before 1955, was an East Pakistan-based Pakistani political party founded by Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy in February 1950. Pir of Manki Sharif and Khan Ghulam Mohammad Khan from the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) joined it soon afterwards.

Muslimliga (1947–1958) Jinnah war 1948 bis zu seinem Tode auch der erste Staatschef von Pakistan. 1954 verlor die bis dahin in Pakistan regierende Muslim League bei den Regionalwahlen in Ostpakistan gegen die oppositionelle Awami-Liga. Iskander Mirza wurde als Gouverneur von Ostpakistan eingesetzt.
By 1956 the Awami League was the most popular party in East Pakistan and became the Muslim League's main contender for power. From 1958 to 1971 Pakistan was reduced to an administrative state with four years of martial law and a diminished role for its fledgling political parties.
