She is the wife of Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings (film series) and The Hobbit (film series). She, Jackson, and Philippa Boyens are credited with writing the screenplays for all six films, as well as Guillermo del Toro for The Hobbit (film series).
Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens served as librettists, writing lyrics to various music and songs, which David Salo translated into Tolkien's languages. The third film's end song, "Into the West", was a tribute to a young filmmaker Jackson and Walsh befriended named Cameron Duncan, who died of cancer in 2003.
