Während der Konzeptionsphase der Serie im Jahr 2010 beauftragten Schöpferin Lauren Faust und Hasbro Studio B Productions (später DHX Media) für die Animation, und Studio B schlug Thiessen als leitenden Regisseur vor, womit Faust einverstanden war. Thiessens erste Reaktion auf den Auftrag war: „auf mädchenhafte Überlastung vorbereiten“, doch als er Fausts Konzepte sah, war er begeistert.
Als Faust die Serie 2011 verließ, übernahm Thiessen ihre Rolle des Showrunners für die zweite Staffel.
