It was founded as Philips Phonographische Industrie in 1950. In 1946, Philips acquired the company which pressed records for British Decca's Dutch outlet in Amsterdam.

In 1950 the N.V. Philips Phonografische Industrie (PPI) was established. The PPI settled in Baarn and combined all necessary activities (recording, manufacturing, distribution, etc.). It appears that Philips started producing its own records (with Philips as the brand name) in 1950, just before ‘Minigroove’ was introduced in late 1951.
