The band were formed in Stafford, Staffordshire, England, in 1967 by vocalist and harmonica player Colin Cooper (1939–2008), guitarist and vocalist Pete Haycock (1951–2013), guitarist Derek Holt (b. 1949), bassist and keyboardist Richard Jones (b. 1949), drummer George Newsome (b. 1947), and keyboardist Arthur Wood (1929–2005).

It's a pure love song about a woman who enters a man's life and changes his world for the better. The message of love and friendship, along with the line, "You got what it takes so I made you my wife," made the song very popular at weddings. Climax Blues Band bass player Derek Holt wrote this song.
Guitarist Derek Holt had written the ballad “I Love You” about his wife and the positive feelings she inspired in him. When he presented the song to the band while they were working on their 1980 album Flying The Flag, the group felt it was a little too pop-oriented, and was reluctant to record it.
14. März 2017 · Climax kept things rolling, but that all-important follow-up hit eluded them until 1980, when one of guitarist Derek Holt’s songs, I Love You, took them back into the spotlight. A syrupy, AOR ballad, it became both a blessing and curse for Climax. While it boosted their status, especially in the US, it would ultimately break them apart.
Shadowman - the story. Derek Holt and Richard Jones have known each other since being in the same class at primary school in Stafford. Their paths crossed many times in the Stafford music scene until in the spring of 1968, they both became founder members of Climax Chicago Blues Band with Richard on bass guitar and Derek on rhythm guitar.
