16. Jan. 2021 · Located on the Mississippi River close to the neighboring state of Mississippi, the town of Helena – West Helena is considered the birthplaces of blues, and hosts the ever-popular King Biscuit Blues Festival each October.
Helena is the eastern portion of Helena–West Helena, Arkansas, a city in Phillips County, Arkansas, located on the west bank of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1833 by Nicholas Rightor and is named after the daughter of Sylvanus Phillips, an early settler of Phillips County and the namesake of Phillips County.
At Helena-West Helena, the mythic power of the Mississippi can be seen in the River Reach Park. The Delta Cultural Center, a state-owned museum, has exhibits detailing the natural and human history of the Delta region, including the site of the 1863 Battle of Helena and the role of local residents in the development of blues music.
