The California Republican Party was founded in Sacramento on April 18, 1856, when the first mass meeting aggregated in the city. When the American Civil War started, the city was strongly pro-Union, although the opposing side, the Confederate States of America, had active supporters within the city.

In 1852, the city offered its county courthouse to the state of California to house the state legislature, resulting in the city becoming the permanent state capital in 1854 and ushering in the construction of a new state capitol building which was finished in 1874. [12]

In the early 1800s, John Sutter, a German-born Swiss pioneer, arrived in the Sacramento Valley. In 1839, he founded Nueva Helvetia (New Switzerland) on this land, marking a significant shift in Sacramento's history.
Miners, entrepreneurs and developers pour into Sacramento as the start of the Gold Rush begins. Some of these newcomers squat on Sutter Fort and steal his livestock. Sutter will eventually be forced from his land and die bankrupt as a result of the Gold Rush.
First settled in 1839 as New Helvetia by John Sutter, it became an important trading centre during the gold rush. The present city was laid out in 1848 and named for the river. It became the state capital in 1854 and prospered as a transportation and agricultural centre.
