Nitzsche met his first wife, singer Gracia Ann May, while he was working for Capitol Records, who would later join the Blossoms. His second wife was Buffy Sainte-Marie , with whom he co-wrote the Academy Award winning song for 1982, "Up Where We Belong".
In a 1965 interview for Songwriter's Review magazine, one of Jack Nitzsche's first, it's noted that; "he got a job at Capitol Records as an IBM operator and met his wife there who was a secretary (as well as a hopeful singer). She did the demos on the songs he wrote.
