John Hawken joined Strawbs in late 1973. His contribution to the Strawbs legacy was immense and with John on board Strawbs played consistently to the band’s biggest audiences. The breakthrough for Strawbs in the US and Canada was the 1974 album ‘Hero and Heroine’. The following 1975 album

Since 2007, the Strawbs have been recording and touring in two formats: the acoustic format with Cousins, Lambert and Cronk; and the entirely original Hero and Heroine/Ghosts line-up of the electric band from 1974: Cousins, Lambert, Cronk, Coombes and Hawken. The line-up undertook two tours in 2006.
In the spring of 2004, the 1973–1975 Hero and Heroine lineup of the Strawbs (Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert, Chas Cronk, John Hawken and Rod Coombes) reformed, touring and releasing Déjà Fou. This lineup remained constant for four years, before Hawken announced his retirement from the group in June 2008. [37]
Although subsequent records failed to equal the success of "Tobacco Road," the band worked steadily until Hawken moved on late in 1968. Renaissance In late 1968 former Yardbird Chris Dreja , John Hawken and steel player Brian (B.J.) Cole were going to form a country rock band, to be managed by Peter Grant and produced by Mickey Most , but they never got beyond the rehearsal stage.
