In 1773, John Suffern and his wife Mary settled in what now is called Suffern, NY. John was a shrewd man who realized this location was a good place to establish his home/store/tavern and later post office. He named the place “New Antrim,” after his home in Ireland.
Early in New York's history, the Ramapo Pass through the mountains was a perfect location for settlement. So when, in 1763, our namesake John Suffern emigrated from northern Ireland, he bought land near the entrance to the pass and built a large house that became a tavern and inn.

14. Mai 2014 · The History of Suffern. The heirs of village founder John Suffern bought the cannon in 1851 and ritually fired it from the top of nearby Union Hill on Independence Day of every year, as well as for special events like the completion of the Erie Railroad across New York State in 1852.

John Suffern, first Rockland County judge, 1798-1806, after whom the town is named, settled near the base of the Ramapo Mountains in 1773. It was originally called New Antrim, after Suffern's hometown in Ireland. New Antrim's location was considered strategically important in the American Revolutionary War due to its location near Ramapo Pass.
