The ISO 3166 is a standard for coding geographical units issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It consists of three parts.
Part 1 lists two-letter (ALPHA-2) and three-letter country codes (ALPHA-3) since 1974, countries are marked with capital letters. ALPHA-2 codes also form the first two characters for currency codes according to ISO 4217.
The codes are used in IBAN, ISO 7372, 9375, 7501-1, UN/LOCODE and WIPO ST.3 standards. AA, ZZ and QM–QZ & XA–XZ ranges are reserved for private use.

Länder werden dabei durch Großbuchstaben gekennzeichnet. Die zweibuchstabigen Kürzel werden unter anderem als Top-Level-Domain-Kennzeichner (TLD) für Staaten verwendet (z. B. www.denic.de) – mit Ausnahme des Vereinigten Königreichs, für das uk statt gb verwendet wurde.
Der ISO-3166-1 Alpha-2 Code für Deutschland ist "DE" und die entsprechende Länderdomain ist ".de". Für die Schweiz ist der ISO-Code "CH" (für "Confoederatio Helvetica"), was zur Domain ".ch" führt. Es gibt jedoch Ausnahmen, bei denen die ISO-Codes und die Länderdomains nicht übereinstimmen.
