The series aired locally in Los Angeles for four years, from 1951 to 1955, then nationally for another 16 years on ABC from 1955 to 1971, followed by 11 years in first-run syndication from 1971 to 1982.

  7. Lawrence Welk Biography. Lawrence Welk was born in Strasburg, North Dakota. By the age of 13, he had learned to play the accordion well enough to play in church socials. Welk formed his first orchestra in 1927 in Aberdeen, North Dakota and was invited to play on opening day for radio station WNAX of Yankton, South Dakota.
