She was born Hildegarde Loretta Sell in Adell, Wisconsin, [1] and raised in New Holstein, Wisconsin, as a Roman Catholic in a family of German extraction.

Hildegarde Loretta Sell was born in Wisconson on February 1, 1906. Known professionally as "Hildegarde," Miss Sell became a successful caberet and cafe singer. She was also a pianist and an actress. Hildegarde made her first recording on October 17, 1934.
