He had two big hits in the 1950s with The Browning Version and The Importance of Being Earnest, both by gay writers, both dealing with characters struggling with secrets and repressed emotions.
A superb actor, Redgrave himself was a charter member of the post-Great War English acting pantheon and was the sire of an acting dynasty. He and his wife, Rachel Kempson, were the parents of Vanessa Redgrave, Corin Redgrave and Lynn Redgrave and the grandparents of Natasha Richardson, Joely Richardson and Jemma Redgrave.

SIR MICHAEL REDGRAVE, CBE, MA, actor/manager, author, director, teacher, was born in Bristol, March 20, 1908 and died in London March 21, 1985, a victim of Parkinson's disease. His first professional appearance was at the Playhouse, Liverpool in 1934, where he met and married actress Rachel Kempson in 1935.
