In 1978, he published Animations of Mortality, an illustrated, tongue-in-cheek, semi-autobiographical how-to guide to his animation techniques and the visual language in them. Gilliam served as art director on Monty Python's Life of Brian, Terry Jones having taken on sole directing duties.
Vorher erwarb er Erfahrungen im Animationsfilm mit Storytime (1968) und The Miracle of Flight (1974). 1977 folgte sein erster eigener Film: Jabberwocky, der – wie einige andere Filme von Gilliam – fälschlicherweise häufig als Monty-Python-Film bezeichnet wird.

Gilliam preferred cut-out animation, which involved pushing bits of paper in front of a camera instead of photographing pre-drawn cels. The process allows for more spontaneity than traditional animation along with being comparatively cheaper and easier to do.
