The Church are major antagonists of the 2017 Netflix animated dark fantasy series Castlevania, serving as the main antagonists of the first season.
They are a corrupt religious organization that is keeping their power over Wallachia even during Dracula's war on humanity and are the reason for Dracula's anger towards humanity in general, as a Bishop of the Church burned Dracula's wife, Lisa, at the stack under the false assumption that she was a witch. Because of this act of violence, it led to the suffering of many innocent people during Dracula's war on humanity. Despite being brought down after the first season, the effect of their corruption and influence is still present in the background.
Season 1
In the year of 1475, The Bishop has investigated Lisa Tepes and her home under the suspicion of witchcraft. The Bishop and his "priest" found strange technology and science in her home because of this they accuse her of witchcraft and had her burn at the stake in Targoviste. Due to this action, they unleashed the wrath of Vlad "Dracula" Tepes and his war on humanity. Later on, The Bishop is transferred to Gresit due to having disagreements with The Archbishop, from there he took total control over the people and used Dracula war on humanity as to drive the people's paranoia and have them rely on him and his faith for support. One year after Lisa's death, the church were celebrating her death with the Archbishop calling "the devil" a liar but that soon changed when Dracula's flaming head appears. He send his castle and minions to attack every human in Targoviste. Many have died and many have been left traumatized by the event including Zamfir, who started to turn insane and killed the remaining the priests that survived. Around this time of war, the corrupt church spread rumors of the Belmont Family being associated with black magic and the supernatural while accusing them of starting Dracula's war on humanity. They excommunicated the Belmonts and had the civilians to attack their homestead. The civilians detained the last remnant of the family, Trevor, and burned his entire home. With this event, the church branded the Belmonts as heretics. In the year of 1476, Trevor arrived at Gresit in order to look for work until he discover the immense paranoia of the town. Trevor encountered a priest threatening an elder of the speakers in ally way but defend the man from further harm. Afterwords, The Bishop send his men to get Trevor Belmont so he can give a warning to not get in his way of killing the Speakers. Trevor, out of defiance, defended the speakers and revealed the corruption of the church. While the attack on Gresit is happening, the demon, Blue Fangs, enters the church and destroys the Bishop's faith in himself and God by telling him that god does not love him and is repulsed by his actions. Afterwords he kills the Bishop ending his reign of terror and treachery.
Season 3
Before the events season 3 starts, it has been said that a church in Lindenfeld was attacked by a night creature, who is created by Isaac, and revealed to them that the church was responsible for Dracula's war causing them to twist their faith and in way worship Dracula. According to their leader, Prior Sala, says that they still believe in god but felt that Dracula was trying to reunite the humans with his wife and all of this is part of God's plan. In season 3, they try to help the night creature to gain souls of the villagers while bringing Dracula back to life but their plan failed due to the intervention of Trevor, Sypha, Saint Germain, and The Judge.
Season 4
Trevor and Sypha discover that Zamfir has not buried the dead remains of the former rulers of Walachia and ask for a priest in order to give them a proper burial. Zamfir has mention that her people needed holy water for defenses but killed all the remaining priest in order to get it, which shocked and disgusted both Trevor and Sypha.
•When the first season of Castlevania came out, many believe the show was being anti-religious due to how the church is presented and the fact that the writer, Warren Ellies, has spoken many times that he is an atheist.
•However in the context of the show, God does exist including his power, but it's being misused by corrupt humans like the Bishop and Archbishop.
•Trevor asked for a regularly ordain priest to create holy water, this suggests that the priests that was working with the Bishop are not priest at all but a band of mercenaries that was hired by him. And not all priests in the Church are fanatical like the Bishop.
•Blue Fangs says that he can enter the church because God is no longer protecting it and tells the Bishop that God hates him because of his horrendous actions.
•Sypha says that her people believe in God and his wrath but also believes in Yeshua, saying "His sacrifice is a lesson to love unconditionally." Yeshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus, this means that Sypha and her people respects Jesus and the lesson that he brought from his sacrifice.
•Also, she mentions that her people believe in God's wrath and are told stories about it which references the depiction of God from the Old Testament, where he was a more wrathful figure.
