Das World Saxophone Quartet wurde 1977 von den Jazz-Saxophonisten Hamiet Bluiett, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake und David Murray als Saxophonquartett gegründet. The World Saxophone Quartet is an American jazz ensemble founded in 1977, incorporating elements of free jazz, R&B, funk and South African jazz into their music.
Since its inception in 1976, the World Saxophone Quartet has been critically lauded for its improvisatory skills and is considered among the legitimate heirs to such post-bop, free jazz, and postmodern jazz pioneers as Albert Ayler, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, and Eric Dolphy.
