Steven Lee Cropper (born October 21, 1941), [1] sometimes known as " The Colonel ", is an American guitarist, songwriter and record producer. He is the guitarist of the Stax Records house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, which backed artists such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas and Johnnie Taylor.

On his new album Cropper comes full circle, recalling his earliest musical enthusiasm by paying tribute to the 5 Royales and in particular the group’s guitarist, Lowman Pauling, who he has long cited as a formative influence.
Drawn from studio sessions made between 1966 and 1971, this collection brings together the B sides of four of the Mississippi-born singer-guitarist’s early Stax singles, alternate takes of four classic tunes from his repertoire, and five selections which have never been issued previously.
