Phillip Carden Thornalley (born 5 January 1960) is an English songwriter, musician, and producer who has worked in the music industry since 1978. He produced the album Pornography by The Cure and was later their bass player. He began releasing his own music in 1988 and briefly joined the band Johnny Hates Jazz.
"Torn" is a song written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornalley. It was first recorded in 1993 in Danish (under the title "Brændt" , meaning "Burnt") by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, then in English in 1995 by Cutler and Preven's American rock band Ednaswap, and in 1996 by American-Norwegian singer Trine Rein.
The music video features a number of cats and a large lampshade falling on the head of bassist Phil Thornalley. There are many shots of a mansion which the band told a vendor they were interested in buying. They returned the keys in the morning.

Phil Thornalley: Yes, I suppose they did. Once I started learning guitar, a very close friend who I grew up with who's also still in the music business, we kind of started together. Once we learned three chords we wanted to write songs. That was very much the passion, to be a songwriter more so than a performer.
