Richard Barthelmess was an American film actor of the silent era, who starred in Broken Blossoms, Way Down East and The Patent Leather Kid. He was also a founder of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a Navy officer in World War II.

He adopted her son from a previous marriage and their marriage lasted until his death. Richard Barthelmess died on August 17, 1963, from throat cancer. He was aged 68.
