In Reno in the 1930s, William Harrah found a congenial climate for his business talents, establishing bingo parlors, bars, and finally a gambling casino. This oral history contains Harrah's recollections of his childhood and youth in California, his early business ventures there, and the years of growth in Reno and Tahoe.
William F. Harrah era (1937–1978) The company's background can be traced to October 29, 1937, when Bill Harrah opened a small bingo parlor in Reno, Nevada, a predecessor to Harrah's Reno. In 1955, he expanded to Stateline, Nevada, on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, where he would eventually open Harrah's Lake Tahoe.
William F. Harrah collected approximately 1,450 automobiles, which he stored inside warehouses in Sparks, Nevada. It was the world's largest collection of historic automobiles, and was open to the public. [2]
Nevada's first true casino magnate, the late William F. Harrah helped shape the gaming industry throughout Nevada and the world. Starting with a modest business venture in 1932, Harrah's legacy grew from a small bingo parlor in Venice, California, into a veritable casino empire that is still admired and emulated today.
