Also, I think when HE talks about his childhood, and especially his mother, and gets emotional, as he did in some instances, people believe he has real feelings, like maybe remorse, or empathy. This 2-page 1977 letter is one of the letters that a journalist Richard Battin exchanged with Ed Kemper before they eventually met up for an interview in 1977. The interview was recorded and the snippets and very short excerpts from it appeared later in some documentaries.
Serial killer studies have shown there are multiple similar factors that are ubiquitous among serial killers. Firstly, the Macdonald Triad (arson, bed wetting, animal abuse) are all common signs in early adolescents who later became serial killers. Secondly, prefrontal cortex injuries in early adolescents are also common.

One comment summarizes greatly my feelings on Kemper himself as he appears through this interview: "I hate to say positive things about serial killers but this guy was such a waste of an otherwise sharp mind".
