In 1980, a stage production, Hoagy, Bix, and Wolfgang Beethoven Bunkhaus, moved from England to the United States, playing in Indianapolis and Los Angeles. After suffering a heart attack, Carmichael died at his home in Rancho Mirage, California, on December 27, 1981.
