The Royal Italian Army (Italian: Regio Esercito, lit. 'Royal Army') (RE) was the land force of the Kingdom of Italy, established with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. During the 19th century Italy started to unify into one country, and in 1861 Manfredo Fanti signed a decree creating the Army of the Two Sicilies.
Subito dopo l'unità d'Italia nel 1861, venne costituito il Regio Esercito italiano, che nacque dalla fusione dell'"Armata Sarda" con gli altri eserciti operativi nei vari stati preunitari italiani; la denominazione venne stabilita il 4 maggio 1861, con decreto (nota n. 76 del 4 maggio 1861) del Ministro della guerra Manfredo Fanti.
