After her father committed suicide in 1903, she assumed leadership of the Wallace family and provided her mother much-needed emotional comfort. In 1910, she became reacquainted with her childhood friend, Harry S. Truman. She and Harry undertook a long courtship which led eventually to their marriage in 1919.
