Nach seiner Heimkehr aus dem Krieg in die Vereinigten Staaten heiratete er am 28. Juni 1919 seine Jugendliebe Bess Wallace (1885–1982). Aus der Ehe ging eine Tochter, Margaret (1924–2008), hervor. Margaret wurde später Schauspielerin und Autorin; unter anderem veröffentlichte sie auch eine Biografie ihres Vaters.
