    If historical, then 1800 is the obvious best choice: Best graphics, best gameplay (most variety and complexity) and lots of meaningful content from dlcs. If you don't mind older games with (nowadays) kind of clunky gameplay then 1404 is the second best historical anno game behind 1800.

    Honestly, get 1800. It's got the most content, the best QoL features, the prettiest graphics, and it still receiving updates. If you like it there is nothing to stop you going back and trying older games, they go on sale all the time, but you should start with the best game in the series.

    Anno 1404 and Anno 1701 Are the only Anno games with land combat, Multiplayer, and the ability to interact with other players through diplomacy (assuming you mean like declaring war, trading, and stuff). So those are the games that you are, technically, looking for.
