Nach Maos Tod übernahm Deng Xiaoping die Macht in China. Mit seinen Wirtschaftsreformen leitete er eine radikale Wende in der Politik ein: weg von der zentralistischen Planwirtschaft. Dennoch zielte er niemals auf die Schaffung eines freiheitlichen Staatswesens, auf mehr Demokratie und Liberalismus. Er blieb ein Kommunist chinesischer Prägung.
