The score was composed by Ennio Morricone and directed by Bruno Nicolai, with chorus by Alessandro Alessandroni's I Cantori Moderni and solo violin by Giorgio Mönch. Tavianis' previous composer Giovanni Fusco introduced Morricone to the directors, who originally didn't want to use any original music for the film.
