16. Okt. 2023 · Iowa History Daily: On October 16, 1954, Cy the Cardinal made his debut at an Iowa State pep rally. While the Cyclone nickname dates back to 1895, the hard-to-depict mascot didn’t appear for nearly a half-century before becoming endeared to generations of Cyclone fans.
14. Feb. 1989 · “Cy the Cardinal” (his official name) debuted at the 1954 Homecoming game and has become the enduring symbol of Iowa State athletics. Virgil Petty (’57 farm op, DVM ’64) was chosen out of pity by the athletic club to be the inaugural Cy after just being cut from the varsity basketball team.
Cy. Iowa State’s athletic teams have been known as the Cyclones since 1895. On September 28 of that year the Iowa state football team—who admitted they were only hoping to score—surprised Northwestern University’s team by scoring 36 unanswered points.
