Sliema ( Maltese: Tas-SliemaMaltese pronunciation: [tɐsˈslɪː.mɐ]) is a town located on the northeast coast of Malta in the Northern Harbour District. It is a major residential and commercial area and a centre for shopping, bars, dining, and café life. It is also the most densely populated town on the island.
Much of Malta's population lives within a three kilometer radius of Floriana. This is now one of the most densely populated areas in Europe. The harbours and the surrounding areas make up Malta's Northern and Southern Harbour Districts. Together, these districts contain 27 of 68 local councils.
Malta is subdivided into 6 regions ( Maltese: reġjuni ). Three regions were originally created by the Local Councils Act of 1993, and were integrated into the constitution in 2001.
